Liz and Lee check standards of postgrad training

Two of our staff have been appointed to new roles by the organisation that spearheads education and training in the NHS in Scotland.

Liz Kilgour, microbiology services technical manager, and biomedical scientist Lee McMullen are now tasked with assessing postgraduate training in their specialties on behalf of NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

Liz has become specialty lead for infection sciences and Lee has the equivalent role for blood sciences.

Liz, based at Wishaw General, explained: “Our role is to audit postgraduate training funded by NES across Scotland for quality assurance. We’re both seconded to NES for one day a week.

“I’m really enjoying it as I have always been interested in education.

“I’m currently working out of the Glasgow office, preparing the auditing paperwork, and I’m aiming to start travelling around Scotland to the various locations after Christmas to visit training officers, supervisors and students.

“I’ll be looking at the students’ placements and the labs they’re working in to ensure audit and practice principles are being met, and that they are getting the required support from professionals who are properly qualified.”

Lee, based at Monklands Hospital, is also working in Glasgow, preparing the paperwork before he hits the road early in the New Year.

He said: “I’m really enjoying the challenge of this new role.”
