The Evening Times ran an article about figures in a new report showing that women from Lanarkshire experience higher-than-average rates of stillbirth and neonatal deaths than other parts of Scotland. The region recorded the second-highest rate in Scotland with 6.42 deaths per 1,000 births. However it is worth noting that the figure of 7,096 Lanarkshire resident […]
Feeling snowed under? We can help beat the winter blues

A special festive campaign has been launched by NHS Lanarkshire and North Lanarkshire Council to help people beat the winter blues.
The ‘Feeling snowed under’ campaign aims to help those suffering from anxiety and depression during the festive period.
A booklet providing information and advice to help people deal with pressures such as debt, stress and loneliness over the festive holidays has been produced in partnership with NHS Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire Council, Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service. There is also a South Lanarkshire version of the booklet.
Representatives from the emergency services joined pupils from Glencairn Primary School (pictured above) to help launch the booklet by singing Christmas carols at the Civic Centre in Motherwell.
Some of the keys points to remember this Christmas include:
- Drinking sensibly
- Eating well
- Staying fit and keeping active
- Socialising and getting involved in festive events
- Relaxing and resting
- Minimise things which can cause stress in your life.
The booklet contains contact details for emergency services during the winter, financial and benefits help lines; stress control, domestic abuse support and alcoholics anonymous. Practical tips on staying safe at home and on nights out are also included.
Bobby Miller, head of community care for North Lanarkshire Council said: “Christmas is a time most people look forward to and it should be a time for relaxing and enjoying time with friends and family.
“There are, however, many pressures associated with this time of the year which can cause really worry for people such as financial concerns, staying healthy and feeling lonely. This campaign offers people guidance about services available to help them.
“We hope this will be helpful in taking some of the stress out of Christmas for those feeling under pressure. And just as importantly, it will help others watch out for the signs of stress and depression so they can step in and help before it gets too much for someone.”
Kevin O’Neill, public mental health manager, NHS Lanarkshire added: “The campaign recognises that we can have unrealistic expectations of the festive season. The reality is that it is almost impossible to get through the festive season without experiencing some stress and for others it can be a very tough time of the year.
“Being prepared is really important such as knowing what to do to keep ourselves safe and well and making plans to do that, ensuring we have adequate medication if we take medication and knowing that services and supports are available should we need them.
“Be kind to yourself and others this Christmas by taking care of yours and others mental health.”
Businesses including McDonalds, local pubs, clubs, hospitals and hotels are supporting the initiative and will have copies of the help booklet.
