Healthy crop of good news

Healthy crop of good news

There was a bumper crop of positive headlines this week.

The launch of nominations for our new staff awards made the Rutherglen Reformer, Wishaw Press and the East Kilbride News.

MSP Linda Fabiani thought it was fab that staffing levels within NHS Lanarkshire have increased, according to the East Kilbride News, while three staff who raised more than £2000 for cancer care with a charity disco featured in the Wishaw Press, the Motherwell Times & Bellshill Speaker and the Hamilton Advertiser.

A number of local papers reported on our winter planning and advice for the public to be healthwise and prepare. Nearly half of Lanarkshire’s GP practices will open for additional hours on the Mondays following Christmas and New Year.

Also on the winter theme, a special festive campaign has been launched by North Lanarkshire Council to help people beat the winter blues. A booklet has been produced in partnership with NHS Lanarkshire, with tips for keeping mind and body healthy this Christmas, said the Motherwell Times & Bellshill Speaker and the Cumbernauld News & Kilsyth Chronicle.

The opening of the Lanarkshire Beatson at Monklands Hospital was highlighted in the Wishaw Press and the EK News. Good news on cancer deaths in Lanarkshire, too. The total for those under the age of 75 has hit its lowest level in the last 20 years, reported the Wishaw Press and the EK News.

NHS Lanarkshire has joined a national campaign to encourage people to give themselves peace of mind by thinking about their future health, social and personal care and start the conversation about Anticipatory Care Planning and Power of Attorney, according to the Rutherglen Reformer, Cumbernauld News & Kilsyth Chronicle, the Wishaw Press and the Hamilton Advertiser.

As for negative coverage, concern over illegal parking outside the Houldsworth Centre in Wishaw was highlighted by the Wishaw Press. The same paper said MSP John Pentland has called for an out-of-hours GP service to return to Wishaw and reported health bosses have appealed to GPs not to send patients directly to overworked A&Es.

The Daily Record said casualty departments failed to meet targets for sixth successive week, highlighting Wishaw General as worst performing hospital. The Herald also mentioned the same issue.
