Red ribbons and flags show AIDS support
NHS Lanarkshire staff organised a host of events on December 1 2015 to promote World Aids day.
The annual event is held to show support for people who have been affected or are living with HIV.
As well as hundreds of red ribbons handed out and worn by NHS staff, red ribbon flags were displayed at North and South Lanarkshire Council Headquarters’, the University of the West of Scotland, Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, Airdrie Town Hall and New College Lanarkshire.
Wishaw General Hospital and Motherwell Civic Centre and Theatre were also lit up as part of the national ‘Light Up Scotland’ campaign.
Sandra Dougan, health promotion assistant, who oversaw the event in Lanarkshire, said: “Stigma and discrimination is still very prevalent within Scotland and World AIDS Day gives us the opportunity to challenge this.
“It also gives us the opportunity to encourage us all to reflect on what actions we can take, not only on World AIDS Day, but all year round to think about HIV.”
The aim of this year’s event was to:
- Help prevent new cases of HIV?
- remember those who have died from AIDS?
- challenge the stigma that people living with HIV face?
