Heath visitors' students are top class

Two health visitors are celebrating after the first students they taught put in a top class performance.

Eleanor Calderwood and Angela Wardlaw, based at Blantyre Health Centre, were delighted when students Susan Lambie and David Stewart received awards.

Following tutoring from Eleanor and Angela at the health centre, Susan and David were top of the class in their health visiting course at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), which had over 30 students from five health boards.

Susan was presented with the UWS’s Court Medal and David received the Postgraduate Community Nursing Prize from the Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland.

Susan is now based at Rutherglen Health Centre and David is working from Kildrum Health Centre in Cumbernauld.

Susan said: “The training has been a rewarding and challenging experience and I’m extremely proud to have been awarded the medal. It was all possible thanks to the guidance of Eleanor and the wonderful, supportive team at Blantyre Health Centre, as well as the UWS.”

David commented: “It was a challenging course and if it hadn’t been for Angela and the team at Blantyre being so welcome, it would have been a lot more difficult. It’s a lifelong learning experience so it’s great to still have people at the health centre to chat to.”

Eleanor said: “They were our first set of students after we were put through the teaching course by NHS Lanarkshire. We were still learning too!”

Angela added: “It’s extra special for us given it was our first experience of giving guidance to students.”
