Margaret retires after nearly 40 years' service

After 39 years’ service, senior charge nurse Margaret Douglas, retired from NHS Lanarkshire.

Margaret, who was based within ward seven at Wishaw General Hospital, joined NHS Lanarkshire in 1977 as a student nurse at Law Hospital. On completing her training, Margaret moved to the then Bellshill Maternity where she trained in midwifery before transferring to Motherwell maternity unit as staff midwife.

Margaret thereafter returned to Law Hospital where she took up the post of staff nurse, a post she held for three years before being promoted to sister within the medical block.

In 1989, Margaret briefly joined ward 23 before moving to ward 21 due to refurbishment where she remained until the hospital closed in 2001.

In 2001, Margaret moved to ward seven (respiratory) within the new Wishaw General Hospital, a post she held until her retirement.

Following her retirement, Margaret rejoined NHS Lanarkshire as a specialist nurse where she continues to provide support to the lung cancer service at Wishaw General Hospital.

Margaret lives in Wishaw with her husband Joe and has two daughters Karina – a staff nurse at Wishaw General – and Lauren.

To mark her retirement, a celebratory event was held at Wishaw Golf Club.
