Haven’s birthday bash

Haven's birthday bash

There were birthday wishes for The Haven centre, in the grounds of Wishaw General Hospital, as they celebrated two years of being open.

Cake, raffles, crafts and a tombola were all enjoyed at the centre.

Since its the opening in August 2015 on the Wishaw site, over 300 families affected by life-limiting illness have received emotional support at The Haven.

The centre is going from strength to strength thanks to the generous support from the local community, and funding from Big Lottery Fund Scotland and The Alliance.

Fiona Davidson, Haven nurse, said: “Around 50 people popped in to wish us happy birthday and enjoyed a vibrant, friendly atmosphere.

“A fantastic £560.75 was raised on the day and we could not have done this without our wonderful team of volunteers. A huge thank you to everyone who supported this event and made the day such a success.”

Yvonne Cameron, co-ordinator for carers from North Lanarkshire Carers Together, added: “It was a great day for all who attended and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting some of the carers I have met over the years and referred to The Haven. The whole day was extremely well organised and it was a credit to you all, for the beautiful home baking and volunteer support you had on the day.”

The Haven, which also has centres in Blantyre and Forth, offers a range of person-centred services.

These are designed using a proven Haven model, and based on feedback from people who need timely, emotional support when faced with the demands of living with a life-limiting condition.

In addition to one-to-one consultations and therapies, The Haven also provides opportunities for people to connect with others in similar situations, reducing isolation, and provides encouragement to connect people with local support networks.

Recent developments have included an enhanced lymphoedema self-management programme and group work suitable for a variety of clients, including a men’s support group, a relaxation group, a bereavement group and a ladies’ group.

The Haven runs a free, self-referral service. If you or anyone you know would like more information or to access this support, please call 01698 366948.
