Scotland’s top doctor visits Wishaw

Scotland’s chief medical officer,Dr Catherine Calderwood,visited NHS Lanarkshire’sobstetrics and gynaecology team to congratulate them on being recognised as one of the top 10 training departments in the UK by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG).
Speaking at the visit, Dr Catherine Calderwood, said: “It is a terrific testimony that the highly commended for ‘gynaecology training, obstetric training, professional development and overall performance’ is based on the
feedback from trainee doctors.”
Dr Evelyn Ferguson, consultant obstetrician/gynaecologist, is the NHS Lanarkshire lead clinical trainer and joint RCOG college tutor.
Both Evelyn and colleague, Dr Sikhar Sircar, find out each trainee’s educational requirements and then match the trainees with suitable supervisors and tailor their daily work schedule in accordance
with their training needs.
Evelyn said: “We were all delighted that the chief medical officer took the time to visit the team. It was a great opportunity for our trainees to speak with Dr Calderwood and to give examples of the training we do.”
Evelyn was also awarded runner-up for the individual RCOG Trainer of the Year; as nominated by the west of Scotland trainee doctors.
Neena Mahal, NHS Lanarkshire chair, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the department’s recognition as one of the best 10 obstetrics and gynaecology training units in the UK.
“This, coupled with the RCN Maternity Service of the year award, acknowledges the excellent teamwork of the whole maternity unit and the positive impact this has on the care we provide for women and babies.”
