Putting the ‘boot on the other foot’ for dementia

Home support services in Coatbridge got a unique insight into what it is like to live with dementia.
Health and social care staff and employees from the third sector were part of a joint training exercise on board a specially designed dementia bus.
The ‘Dementia Experience
Bus’ allowed staff to better understand dementia by walking in the shoes of a person with the disease.
John McGeough, team leader, said: “Employees had the opportunity to come together to share experiences and take part in innovative dementia training which gave them a taste of what having dementia might be like.
“It was hoped the insight will help the staff improve their practice resulting in better outcomes for people living with dementia in the community and who receive services through health and social care or the third sector.”
Among the staff who attended were home support workers managers, integrated day service, district nursing, community mental health, occupational therapists, addiction support workers, dementia champions and third sector partners.
