Healthy lifestyles on the agenda at learning disability events

NHS Lanarkshire’s learning disability service held two events as part learning disability week.
The free healthy lifestyles events took place in the Sir Matt Busby Leisure Centre, Bellshill and the Fairhill Lifestyles Centre in Hamilton.
The aim of them was to give people with a learning disability, their families and carers the chance to speak to health professionals from NHS Lanarkshire’s learning disability service.
The service includes physiotherapy, dietetics, nursing, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, psychology and psychiatry.
Amanda Jones, specialist physiotherapist, adult learning disabilities service, said: “The events were all about promoting a healthy lifestyle and encouraging people with learning disabilities to be more active.
“For example, participants got the opportunity to take part in the Circ8 exercise class which is specially designed for people with learning disabilities.
“They were also a great opportunity for people and their families and carers to find out more about the support available from the learning disability service.
“Both events were very well attended and many of those who came along also got oral health and stopping smoking information as well as the chance to try out some complimentary therapies.”
