NHS Lanarkshire whistleblowing policy

NHS Lanarkshire whistleblowing policy

NHS Lanarkshire strives to be a safe place for staff to raise concerns about matters that are in the public interest.

The ‘Whistleblowing’ policy has been developed to reassure staff that it is safe and acceptable to raise concerns and describes the correct procedure for staff to follow.

The policy applies to all directly employed staff, including bank/temporary staff and staff on secondments. It also applies to workers (including students on placements), volunteers and ex-employees who may have concerns about malpractice or wrongdoing.

Staff are asked to familiarise themselves with the policy if they have concerns about malpractice or wrongdoing and feel that it is something which NHS Lanarkshire should know about or investigate. Any concerns should be raised as soon as possible with a line manager or lead clinician in the first instance. This may be done by speaking or writing to the manager concerned. If a member of staff feels unable to raise the matter in this way, they should contact one of the senior managers listed in the policy.

NHS Lanarkshire will investigate all genuine concerns that are raised through the policy and will ensure that staff are protected from victimisation and reprisals. Where a concern relates to a personal employment matter and/or how a member of staff has been treated then the ‘Grievance’ or ‘Bullying and Harassment’ policies should be used.

John White, director of human resource, reiterated: “We want to emphasise that NHS Lanarkshire is a safe place for staff to raise concerns about matters that are in the public interest. Patient safety and quality of care remain our main priorities.”

Lilian Macer, employee director, added: “It is important that staff raise any concerns they might have as soon as possible with their line manager or one of the managers named in the policy. If they need advice or support they should speak to a member of the HR department or their trade union representative.”
