Newspapers can and do cover good news

A host of services and individuals helped to keep the headlines mostly positive for Lanarkshire this past week.

The efforts of Lanarkshire stroke services, named among the best in the country, June Delaney’s dementia knowledge being shared globally, health visiting services winning a Baby Friendly Unicef award, and the students of Dental Outreach Centre in Coatbridge putting smiles back on faces with free dental work, were all widely covered in both local and regional newspapers.

In Clydesdale, the Lanark and Carluke Gazette’s told how a patient’s contact with NHS Lanarkshire through patient opinion, led to additional seating in Lanark Health Centre.

It all helped to show that, despite what is often claimed, newspapers can and do cover good news.

As we know, they also cover the bad, and this week The Wishaw Press told of a local resident who has set up an online petition in protest at the out-of-hours service changes at Wishaw General.

Nationally, other newspapers reported on the problems health boards across Scotland are facing with regards to GP recruitment.

We, and we’re sure you, can see the link between these last two items. We live in hope that the newspapers will to one day.
