adult abuse - recognise the signs and report it

If you thought a child was at risk of harm you would do something about it.

A Scottish Government campaign aims to get people thinking the same way about adults.

It is estimated that social work departments across Scotland receive around 300 referrals every week in relation to adult abuse and the national campaign wants everyone to act if they suspect someone is being physically, emotionally, sexually or financially exploited or neglected.

Wendy Mitchell, nurse consultant for child adult and family protection, said: “If you know or believe an adult is at risk, you have a duty to report and cooperate with the responsible social work locality.

“We appreciate it’s not always easy to identify abuse, but there are signs and situations to be aware of.

“For example, a person may have unexplained cuts and bruises, or refuse to talk about injuries.

“They may be failing to look after themselves or their property, or are confused about where money has gone, or are giving money to people for dubious reasons.

“They may appear quiet, withdrawn or nervous around certain people, or get upset at the mention of their relationship, or may constantly have people ‘hanging out’ at their house.

“If faced with these situations and suspicious, contact the relevant authority.”

Adult harm can affect anybody, but people who can’t look after or stand-up for themselves can be particularly at risk, whether through personal circumstances, physical or learning disability, age, illness or injury.
