Andrew is on the run for charity
Wishaw General orthopaedic consultant Andrew MacDonald is taking on the challenge of the Great North Run after a family member was hit by serious illness.
Andrew is hoping staff will support him by making a donation to spur him on – as they did last time he took on the same challenge.
He said: “At the start of the year, our family received news that my father-in-law was diagnosed with a large meningioma – a type of brain tumour – which had caused him to lose part of his sight.
“Still a young man at 62, this forced him to stop work and meant he could no longer drive. He was fortunate enough to have the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford as his local neurosurgical centre and he had the tumour successfully removed during a marathon nine-hour operation.
“It is too early to say whether his sight will return, but he remains well.
“I love to run and I did the Great North Run in Newcastle/Gateshead a couple of years back, raising money for motor neurone disease research, and was bowled over by the generosity of the NHS Lanarkshire staff.
“This year I am running again, in September, and would like to raise some money for the Brainstrust, a great charity which provides real support to patients with brain tumours right throughout their journey, from diagnosis to treatment and beyond.
“I hope to better my time of 1.54 despite being a couple of years older!”
