Former chief medical officer for Scotland Professor Sir Harry Burns is to be a member of the new oversight board for NHS Lanarkshire’s project to replace University Hospital Monklands.

The appointment of Sir Harry, professor of global public health at the University of Strathclyde, as an independent member of the Monklands Replacement Oversight Board (MROB) was approved today (28 Aug) by the Board of NHS Lanarkshire.

The Board also agreed that NHS Lanarkshire non-executive directors Brian Moore and Michael Fuller will join the MROB.

The NHS Lanarkshire Board previously approved the appointments to the MROB of two other non-executive directors, Dr Lesley Thomson QC, who will chair the MROB, and Lilian Macer.

As part of ongoing engagement with the public forums, which have been a core element of the project to date, both North Lanarkshire Public Partnership Forum (NLPPF) and South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Forum (SLH&SCF), which meet regularly to discuss local health and social care issues, have each been asked to nominate two public representatives to join the MROB, and this is currently under their consideration.

The establishment of the MROB is among the actions being carried out by NHS Lanarkshire to implement the recommendations of the Independent Review of the process followed by the Monklands Replacement/Refurbishment Project, published in June.

Neena Mahal, Chair of the NHS Lanarkshire Board, said: “I am delighted that Professor Sir Harry Burns has agreed to join the MROB. Having such an eminent and respected expert in the field of healthcare in the role of an external, independent member will help provide greater public confidence in the project, as will the ongoing involvement of the public forum representatives.

“The non-executive directors who will sit on the MROB will also use their considerable experience to bring support and scrutiny to the MRP, with the appointment of Ms Macer, NHS Lanarkshire’s employee director, ensuring that staff engagement continues to be at the heart of the project.”

MRP director Graeme Reid added: “The work of this new oversight board, which will report to the Board of NHS Lanarkshire, will help the MRP to move forward as we address the urgent need to provide a new, state-of-the-art University Hospital Monklands for the communities of Lanarkshire.”

It is expected that the MROB will meet for the first time in September.
