From Saudi to Lanarkshire – Anne’s varied career

After 38 years’ service, senior charge nurse Anne McWilliams retired from NHS Lanarkshire.
Anne, who was based within the Glenaffric day unit at Coathill Hospital, trained as an enrolled nurse at Monklands Hospital and, on qualifying, worked in ward 19. Anne went to Kent for a conversion course and, on completion, returned to ward 19.
During her nursing career, Anne was posted to Saudi Arabia where she worked in Riyadh for a number of years. On her return to the UK, she moved to her current post with the Coathill day unit, a post she held until her retirement.
Anne worked with a team of nurses, health care support workers and administration workers. Colleagues said she was a very valued member of the multi-disciplinary team supporting patients over 65 as well as adult stroke and Parkinson’s patients. She played an integral role in supporting all consultant and specialist nurse-led clinics as well as having close links with occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language and dental departments.
She was also a key link within the older people’s locality planning group in both Airdrie and Coatbridge.
In her spare time, Anne loves walking her dog Chico. She has a love of music and film and has many friends with whom she socialises for meals out and spa days.
Anne is a great support to family and friends and is looking forward to spending more time with them in her retirement.
Eileen Clarke, senior nurse, older people’s services, said: “Anne has been in nursing for nearly 40 years. Throughout her career in various specialties, she has always been very focused on providing the best care for patients and their families.
“Her dedication to her nursing career has been outstanding and she has always shown great pride in being a nurse. Even as she heads towards her retirement, she is still striving to make improvements and to provide a person-centred service in conjunction with all her colleagues.
“Anne will be sadly missed by so many colleagues who have worked with her over the years, both in Monklands Hospital and Coathill Hospital. We would all like to wish her a very happy and healthy retirement.”
