Good practice healthcare cuts infections

Staff at Hairmyres Hospital gave themselves a pat on the back after being PVC related SAB free for an entire year.

On the day staff reached the landmark, some of them as well as members of the Hairmyres’ infection prevention and control (IPC) team, used the opportunity to highlight the achievement but also remind everyone to keep up the good work.

Anne Leitch, senior nurse medical services, at Hairmyres, said “We were pretty pleased with ourselves for reaching this and we decided to have a combined event with the IPC team.

“We wanted to do this as we’re aware that staphylococcus aureus is a micro-organism responsible for a large number of healthcare associated infections (HAI’s) and the bacteraemia caused by staphylococcus aureus can be a serious life-threatening infection with an associated mortality of 30 per cent.”

SABs can often occur when a healthcare worker fails to prevent or treat a primary infection – for example a wound infection, pressure ulcer infection or invasive device infection.

Anne continued: “Up to 80 per cent of SABs are associated with healthcare interventions and the most preventable are those caused by invasive devices.”
