Martha McMaster retires after a remarkable 43 years service

After a remarkable 43 years service, deputy charge nurse Martha McMaster retired in May.

Martha, who was based within the emergency room at Wishaw General Hospital, began her career with NHS Lanarkshire on 5 January 1972 when she underwent her nursing training at Law Hospital.

After qualifying in April 1975, Martha joined the accident and emergency and orthopaedics departments.

Following the birth of her two children, Martha returned to the accident and emergency department in April 1982 where she remained until her retirement.

Martha is married to Hugh and has two sons Stephen and Colin and four granddaughters.

In her spare time Martha enjoys spending time with her family, holidaying – especially many weekends away with colleagues – reading and shopping with friends.

Senior charge nurse Tracy Dodd said: “Martha is an excellent nurse who is extremely well liked by all colleagues old and new. Martha was an enrolled nurse on night duty when I first started working with her approximately 28 years ago. Martha has since went on to complete the minor injury illness treatment course and progressed to a Band 6 in this role. Martha has been an excellent mentor to other members of staff, both from this hospital and the local cottage hospitals in the minor service, sharing her orthopaedic knowledge and skills. We wish Martha and her family good health and a long and happy retirement”.
