The Evening Times ran an article about figures in a new report showing that women from Lanarkshire experience higher-than-average rates of stillbirth and neonatal deaths than other parts of Scotland. The region recorded the second-highest rate in Scotland with 6.42 deaths per 1,000 births. However it is worth noting that the figure of 7,096 Lanarkshire resident […]
Patient Safety Week: Calum Campbell discusses patient safety

Patient Safety Week is here, running from 24-28 October.
The event marks the launch of a refreshed Prioritised Patient Safety Plan following two years of successful work by the Patient Safety Reducing Harm Collaborative.
NHS Lanarkshire chief executive Calum Campbell said Patient Safety Week puts a spotlight on a vitally important issue for the health board.
Calum said: “Patient safety is our number one priority.
“When we’re caring for patients we must do so safely and effectively – it’s at the heart of everything we do.
“We’ve seen numerous successes around patient safety over the past two years as part of our local safety collaborative
“The staff’s hard work has led to phenomenal progress on how we tackle the life-threatening condition sepsis. We have cut the risk of death from sepsis by nearly a third within hospitals.
“There has also been a significant improvement around the prevention of falls among patients while they are in our care.
“There are many more examples of success that are collectively making a big difference.
“That is reflected at all three of our general hospitals through a big reduction in hospital standardised mortality ratios (HSMR). NHS Lanarkshire has exceeded a national improvement aim to reduce HSMR by 20 per cent.
“However, we recognise there are still areas for improvement and we are continuing to work on those.
“We are running a patient safety culture survey throughout October so that all members of staff can give us their views as we plan our future priorities in this area. I’d urge all of our colleagues to fill in the survey.
“I would also encourage you all to get involved in Patient Safety Week and the local activities.”
Throughout the week the following activities will be taking place across both health and social care partnerships and the three acute sites:
- A local patient safety stand and drop-in area for staff;
- Visits to wards and departments to speak to staff about what patient safety means to them;
- Lunchtime sessions hosted by the Patient Safety Team, site chiefs and staff to share successes to date;
- Quality improvement labs with a focus on patient safety hosted by the safety team and safety and quality fellows;
- Asking patients/visitors to share how safe their stay or visit was and what patient safety means to them.
