Positive week of news

Positive week of news

It was a week when positive news ruled in the headlines.

Our emergency departments often face criticism for their waiting times but this week was an occasion to celebrate improvements.

Hairmyres Hospital’s accident and emergency department managed to improve waiting times despite the busy festive period, reported the East Kilbride News. Wishaw General Hospital ended 2015 by meeting their Government-targeted accident and emergency waiting times for the third time, said the Wishaw Press.

Still on the emergency department theme, the Hamilton Advertiser told how NHS Lanarkshire is reminding people to “know who to turn to” so they don’t visit A&E for inappropriate reasons.

Awards were highlighted in the Motherwell Times & Bellshill Speaker. Midwives at Wishaw General are up for a prestigious national award. Their method of improving the assessment of women’s experience of giving birth is among the finalists in the Royal College of Midwives’ awards. The paper also told how two ECT nurses dedicated to improving the mental health of people in Lanarkshire have received an award.

Meanwhile the Rutherglen Reformer described how NHS Lanarkshire’s dietetic service has produced a pack to help staff identify patients at risk of malnutrition to allow earlier intervention.

The Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser told the heart-warming story of retired engineer Alastair Donald, who says that NHS Lanarkshire’s ‘Florence’ text messaging system has “revolutionised” his personal healthcare.

There was very little negative coverage this week.

The Wishaw Press said a local woman had problems travelling to the out-of-hours GP service in Airdrie in the middle of the night after her taxi driver got lost.

The East Kilbride News and the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser said latest figures reveal that almost 10 per cent of planned medical operations across Lanarkshire were cancelled in one month.

Reporting on health board budgets, The Herald said NHSL estimates it will have to save five per cent of its budget in 2016/17 and is “working through the implications of this”.
