Staff to have access to new communications platform

Staff across NHS Lanarkshire will be introduced to a new unified communications platform over the next two years.

Staff will be given new desk handsets that will allow for great flexibility including hot-desking and will allow them to log on at different locations as well as mobile working.

The new system has a more unified capability to support soft phone, voice mail, call recording and video conferencing across the whole estate as well as providing a new switchboard solution.

The new system will cover the majority of NHS Lanarkshire sites with the exception of the PFI sites at the University Hospitals at Hairmyres and Wishaw.

Graeme Robb, eHealth Project Manager, said: “eHealth will be the first area to move to the new handsets. This will allow us to address any issues and put robust processes in place prior to being rolled out to other sites.

“There will also be an emphasis on targeting sites that have older infrastructures first within the estate where we know there are challenges at present.”

As well as getting new handsets, users will be allocated new numbers and will be provided with instructions on how to log on to the new phones.

Shane Carrier, Telecoms Manager, said: “Although the main site and business facing numbers will be retained, individual users switching to the new system will have a new, unique telephone number which could stay allocated to them and will be available through the corporate directory on all phones.

“Since individual telephone numbers will be changing, staff will also need to ensure that they have communicated their new numbers to their frequent callers.”

DECT phones and pagers will also be upgraded to new unified single devices at University Hospital Monklands.  The devices also have the capability to provide enhanced patient care support features for clinicians.

Fax machines will be phased out.  The project team are currently engaging with senior management to look at alternatives prior to the fax machines being decommissioned.

Details of switch over dates will be announced at a later date.
