Support for distressed patients rolls out

University Hospital Wishaw emergency department staff launch DBI on their site.
The Distress Brief Intervention (DBI) programme continues with its phased implementation across Lanarkshire.
The innovative pilot is testing how trained frontline health, police and ambulance services provide compassionate support to those who present in distress and refer the person to the DBI service which provides community-based support within 24 hours for up to 14 days.
The emergency department (ED) at University Hospital Wishaw (UHW) joined the other two acute EDs when staff started making referrals to DBI back in March.
Senior charge nurse at UHW ED, Andy Pender, said: “We were really looking forward to DBI being introduced.
“We’d heard how ED staff at both Hairmyres and Monklands had found it so useful and, more importantly, how patients have been engaging and benefiting from the support they receive.”
The programme is also in operation within the out-of-hours services in Douglas Street, some GP practices in Airdrie, Scottish Ambulance Service and Police Scotland.
