Teams take nearly 30 million steps to health

The annual Walk for Health Challenge within Clydesdale Healthy Working Lives ran for seven weeks to the end of June.

Teams of five took part in the walking challenge and this year 19 teams registered with 12 of them completing the full event.

A grand total of 28,935,830 steps were taken over the seven weeks.

The winners of this year’s challenge were The Rehab Rock Stars with a fantastic team total of 4,996,552 steps.

Team leader Gailene Cochrane, who’s a district nurse, said: “My team have taken the walking challenge with great enthusiasm. They have walked or run before work which they have never done before.

“We walked in our lunch break every day. We met at the weekend for our ‘big walk’ followed by coffee and banter. One of the team members hired a treadmill and did a minimum 30,000 steps every day.

“We have lost a total of 18lbs with our healthy eating working so well with our walking challenge. We increased our activity by joining the local gym where we challenged ourselves with new exercise classes we had never done before.

“We had lots of fun along the way and we are going to keep walking.”

Runners up were Take a Hike, team leader Janet Robison, with 3,231,665 steps, and Hot Steppers, team leader Jo Duffy, with 3,016,463.

The aim of the challenge is to get people more active – changing their normal routine, walking at lunch time, using the stairs, parking further away in the car park or even getting off the bus a stop earlier.

It all adds up – it’s estimated that 10,000 steps equates to approximately five miles.

Learning and development manager Agnes Robb, who was the organiser, said: “I would like to congratulate everyone who took part in this year’s Walk for Health challenge for their support and we look forward to you joining us again next year. Happy walking!”
