Warning for all – always treat patient records properly

The Fairwarning system identifies when patient information has been accessed inappropriately.

Unless you are treating a patient, or managing the admin to support treatment, you must not access:
• your own information
• friends, neighbours and family member information
• colleague information
• high-profile patient information.

However, the Fairwarning system has shown that staff are continuing to access health records when they shouldn’t and the number of data protection breaches continues to rise.

As a result, NHS Lanarkshire is adopting a zero tolerance approach and all alleged breaches will be investigated through the Effective Management of Employee Conduct policy.
