Ransomware update: Q&As
1. What if someone does not work on a Friday and is unable to leave their PC/laptop on this week?
The machine will download the patches the next time it is switched on.
2. Can I switch all the PC/laptops in the office on for colleagues who are not here, or do they need to be logged in for it to work?
Yes, the machines should be switched on but not logged in.
3. Should I lock the screen or log out before leaving the PC/laptop on this week?
Log out is best as it ensures any unsaved work is captured before the patching process starts. Staff should log out of machines at the end of the day but do not shut down.
4. We have a PC/laptop that is linked to systems that will be needed overnight. What will happen to these systems?
We are trying to stagger the deployment to ensure only a selection of PCs are patched in an area at any one time. If there are any machines which are critical for patient care please inform the eHealth Service Desk as soon as possible.
5. I need to take my laptop home this week (for example, for on call duties). Should I switch it off, then switch it back on when I get home?
The laptop will download patches the next time it is connected to the NHSL network
6. Can PC/laptops still be used at night while the patch is being installed?
Yes, PCs can be used although they may run slower and reboot several times so please ensure work is saved regularly.
7. Can patch be installed over remote access?
No, the patches will not download via SRA
8. Will installing the patch affect email on mobile devices?
No, mobile devices will not be affected
9. What if someone is out of the office until Monday and has their laptop away with them? When will they get the patch?
They will get the patches the next time they log in to the NHSL network.
10. When will I know if the patch update has been completed?
The eHealth Department will provide updates later in the week on progress.
