Ethel Cunningham retires

Friends and colleagues gathered to pay a fond farewell to Ethel Cunningham who retired in March after a remarkable 42 years service.

The community staff nurse, who was based at Bellshill community health centre, joined the NHS in 1975 as a registered general nurse at Edinburgh Royal Hospital.

After completing her training, Ethel took up a post at Yorkhill Sick Children’s Hospital where she remained until 1977.

In 1980, Ethel left the NHS for a time and took up employment with British Rail where she was based within occupational health.

In 1987, Ethel returned to Yorkhill Sick Children’s Hospital before leaving to have her three children – Craig (34), Ewan (31) and Kirsty (26).

During her career, Ethel has lectured on women’s health and spent some time as a nurse in a nursing home.

Ethel joined NHS Lanarkshire in 1999 as a health visitor assistant and moved to the community nursing team at Bellshill Community Health Clinic in 2000 where she remained until her retirement.

To mark her retirement, Ethel plans to travel to Bolivia at the end of June to visit her son and new grandson Sam (10 months).

District nurse team leader, Allison Campbell, said: “Ethel always has a smile on her face and wherever she goes she seems to spread joy to those around her.  She will be sorely missed by patients and staff.  We would all like to wish her well in her retirement”.
