Hundreds of nominations for dedicated staff and important health messages highlighted.

This week patients, visitors and staff were reminded that the nominations for the staff wards will close on 31 January.

Over 250 nominations have already been received for NHS Lanarkshire’s staff awards.

Calum Campbell, chief executive, said: “We have a lot of hard working and dedicated staff throughout Lanarkshire, who provide an exceptional standard of care to patients on a daily basis.

“NHS staff are often present at some of the most challenging events in a person’s life and the care that they give in these times can make a lasting impression on a patient, their family and carers.

“We often hear from members of the public who are looking for a way to recognise staff who have given them a positive health care experience. The Staff Awards is an excellent opportunity for us all to appropriately acknowledge and recognise our dedicated staff and volunteers.”

The new awards will see staff from across Lanarkshire recognised for the inspirational work that they do.

Winners of the awards will be announced in a ceremony due to be held on Wednesday 18 May 2016.

It was Cervical Cancer Prevention Week and NHS Lanarkshire highlighted the importance of cervical screening, commonly known as a smear test.

Cases of influenza A H1N1 was reported to be one of the viruses identified as circulating in the community.  The newspapers carried our message on the importance of the influenza vaccine which helps protect against flu and is strongly recommended.

Also NHS Lanarkshire had the heaviest baby in Scotland, weighing 13lbs 1oz, in 2015.

Many newspapers ran with the story that more than 11,000 patients have been discharged from Lanarkshire in the middle of the night over the past two years. However the figures cannot be interpreted as the actual time of discharge.

Our electronic system records the time of data entry rather than the actual time the patient was discharged. To say that this is the time that the patient was sent home is inaccurate and this was highlighted in our freedom of information response to Doctor Simpson. In addition, the overall discharge figure for Lanarkshire includes over 2,000 deaths.

Safety is our top priority when discharging patients. We only discharge patients when it is appropriate to do so and it is not our normal practice to discharge patients between the hours of 9pm and 9am.
