Looking for a star performance in infection prevention

A pink star is the latest alert to be used by the Infection Prevention & Control Team (IPCT) to combat the spread of healthcare associated infections (HAIs).
The pink star appeared on the TrakCare system from 1 June next to the name of any patient who has a past history or current positive screen for an HAI.
Emer Shepherd, head of IPC, said: “This is such a simple step but we’re confident the pink star will really help all staff better manage infection prevention and control.
“It’s very easy to use as all staff have to do is look out for the pink star when patients are admitted to their areas and click on it to see why the alert has been recorded and when.”
The star will alert staff to patients who have the conditions:
• MRSA (Meticillin resistant staphylococcus aureus)
• PVL MRSA (Panton Valentine Leukocidin Meticillin resistant staphylococcus aureus)
• CPE (Carbapenemase Producing Enterobacteriaceae)
• VRE (Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus)
Emer continued: “The IPCT will ensure that the alert is live and reflects the most recent screening results for the patient, including the site of screening and the date an organism is isolated.”
