Mum wins bookbug prize

Four month old Daniel couldn’t wait to get his hands on his family’s prize thanks to Mum, Helen Mitchell of Moodiesburn, making the decision to complete a questionnaire produced by the Community Learning and Development Strathkelvin Partnership which focussed on the National Book Bug Programme.

Membership of this group is made up of various public sector and voluntary sector organisations.

Sharon Gusman from NHS Lanarkshire had the pleasure of presenting the well-deserved winners their prize.

Book Bug sessions use song and rhyme to effectively support local parents & families in their children’s learning and development.  The free sessions are currently being underutilised within the community and thanks to Helen and other families, data was collated to support plans in addressing this issue.

The programme links into the workstreams of the Early Years Collaborative, Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) and Raising Attainment for All.

Findings from the questionnaire suggested that some local families were aware of the various benefits of sharing stories, songs and rhymes with their child however, were not attending for a number of reasons.  The partnership are trying to address the barriers highlighted to ensure the Book Bug sessions within the Strathkelvin area are maximised and local children reap the benefits of early literacy.
