Number of people experiencing flu is increasing

Due to an increasing number of patients experiencing flu, new advice has been issued in relation to the prescribing of antivirals.

A letter from the chief medical officer, which was issued this week, advises that antivirals can now be prescribed for the prevention or treatment of influenza where clinically appropriate.  Any patient hospitalised with influenza should be given antivirals.

Staff who have not yet been immunised are being encouraged to receive the vaccine as quickly as possible. The messages feature medical director Iain Wallace, interim executive director of NMHAP’s Maria Docherty and director of allied health professionals Peter McCrossan.

To arrange the vaccination, contact the occupational health department. Alternatively, you can get in touch with a peer immuniser in your workplace. A list of all peer immunisers can be found on FirstPort.
