Thinking about mental health in the workplace

Thinking about mental health in the workplace

Today is World Mental Health Day and the theme this year is mental health in the workplace.

To mark the occasion Healthy Working Lives has decided to deliver a campaign that highlights what support is available to our staff in NHS Lanarkshire.

One in four adults are likely to have a mental health problem in any given year. This can have a profound impact on the lives of tens of millions of people in the UK, and can affect their ability to sustain relationships, work, or just get through the day.

But an ill-informed and damaging attitude among some people exists around mental health that can make it difficult for some to seek help.

It is estimated that only about a quarter of people with a mental health problem in the UK receive on-going treatment, leaving the majority of people grappling with mental health issues on their own, seeking help or information and dependent on the informal support of family, friends or colleagues.

So, what is NHS Lanarkshire doing to help?

NHS Lanarkshire is committed to the health and wellbeing of all employees by placing value on both physical and mental health as part of the Stress and Mental Wellbeing Policy that is currently in place to support staff.

In addition to this, new guides have recently been developed to further support staff and managers alike as well as highlight what learning is available and may help for certain mental health issues.

These guides are available on Firstport at  http://firstport2/staff-support/healthy-working-lives/default.aspx under the mental health section.

Support is available on range of issues and concerns and it would be worth checking out these guides to see if they can help you personally or in your role as a manager.  You might find something that helps or works for you.
