Tom’s kayaking challenge inspired by niece’s hi-tech treatment

“Canoe” help staff member Tom Wilson raise funds for NHS colleagues who gave his niece a new ear?
Healthcare coordinator Tom Wilson, who’s based at Kirklands, is canoeing 60 miles in a fundraiser for NHS Lothian’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, better known as the Sick Kids.
His niece, nine-year-old Anya, explained Tom’s inspiration for his four-day kayaking adventure through the Great Glen, from Fort William to Inverness.
She said: “I was born with microtia, which means that one of my ears was not developed properly when I was born. It looks a little odd and I can’t hear properly on that side.
“I went to the Sick Kids and had an operation to build a new ear. I have another two operations to go but I’m really excited and can’t wait to see how it will look.
“I was very lucky and the doctors were able to use a new technique in my first operation. I had a 3D scan taken of my normal ear which was then printed and used to build my new ear.
“The 3D printer was funded by the Edinburgh Sick Kids Friends Foundation and I would really like to thank them and help by raising some money of my own.
“Please consider sponsoring my uncle Tom, whose kayaking challenge starts on May 15.”
